Dear Parents/Guardians:

In the aftermath of the horrible and tragic events in Florida, like many districts throughout the nation, we are reviewing our safety plans, emergency protocols and campus security.  Even prior to the events in Florida we had explored communication software that will increase our ability to communicate with staff in the event of an emergency.  We are also reviewing options to install enhanced security cameras at our schools.

Schools have learned several lessons over the past few years.  First, most of the tragic school shootings have occurred at campuses that had full fencing and security measures in place.  The lesson learned is that we must be vigilant on the social and emotional well-being of our students.  We have bullying prevention programs in place, counsellors and "stop-it" which is an anonymous computer App that allows students to report bullying or concerns that they observe.  Nationwide there is an initiative growing; "if you see something, say something".  I have asked principals to review our emergency procedures with their staff and discuss the importance of making connections with their students.

I want to assure you that we work closely with law enforcement and we have emergency procedures in place.  The safety of our students, your children, is our top concern.

Recently some students and families in our community have indicated their desire to participate in a 17-minute walkout on March 14th at 10 a.m. to demand action on gun violence after the tragic event in Parkland, Florida. While this issue weighs heavily on all of our hearts and minds, the district wants to provide some guidance on how our schools plans to conduct activities on this day.

Our top priority is teaching and learning.  As part of the learning process, we respect and support the right of our students to advocate for causes that are important to them.  I have asked each of the principals to actively work with students to plan age-appropriate learning activities.  If the students express a concerted interest to use the walkout as a means to be civically engaged, we ask that it occurs on school grounds under the safety and supervision of adults.

We encourage parents to talk to your student(s) about how they may be feeling regarding this issue and the importance of expressing themselves in appropriate ways at school. As educators, we also recognize that age appropriate student activism is a part of the learning process. When kids are passionate about an issue, it is an opportunity for educators to help students see the connection between curriculum and real life. We will be doing this in school, aligned with our curriculum and state standards.

In addition, it is important to know that disorderly conduct that disrupts school operations is not acceptable and will be handled compassionately but firmly, in accordance with each school’s code of conduct. We are proactively working with students, counselors and local law enforcement to ensure any student-led efforts are handled in the most peaceful, respectful way and in the best interest of our children.

Thank you for your continued support of our schools,

Don T. Beno
